KASI

Collaborative Project

Year 2 - Term 2

2016

The space is located next to Mansion House Station making it easily accessible to the general public. To access the space, you would have to enter the lift where you would escape from the city life by going up onto the rooftop. On the rooftop, we want people to feel more connected to nature by being surrounded by using biophilic elements. The name of Kasi meaning hand (in Finnish) relates to the notion of giving and sharing. The general public can become immersed into an experience where they interact by picking vegetables from the vegetable garden. To the left of the garden is a free space where workshops and activities happen. In the middle of the rooftop, is our Pod where people can sit down to relax and eat.

Included in our design is our interactive waste disposal platform. This app helps us to maintain the vegetable garden by reusing waste. This is done by placing your rubbish into an allocated bin which over time creates compost used to fertilize our garden. Every time you use the bin, you log onto the app and receive credits. You will then be able to exchange these credits for food/juices at Kasi.

SHAND STREET TUNNEL

TfL project

Year 2 - Term 1

2015

Shand Street Tunnel will be closed to all traffic and it needs a design.
I thought a lot about what should be the best solution for that space. The surrounding area, part of the Borough of Southwark, is a busy zone but Shand Street is a bit excluded.
Analysed the area I can say that the space is really quite. There are several studios of design and small offices, nice bars and restaurants, a children school, art galleries, the fashion and textile museum.. all mixed with flats and houses. The first idea was to create something related to the art, something that inspires people and that make the city less gray and boring.

My proposal is to create a space that it will build itself with anybody would have the pleasure to make it. In the beginning, the tunnel will be a ‘graffiti competition’ where there will be a campaign to discover new emerging artists in the city who can take part of it. In the tunnel, it will be building a small warehouse/shop which gives the opportunity to leave items as spray cans, masks, ladders, chairs and all you need to make the graffiti. Consequently, it will be set up an open and free art exhibition where people can walk through and enjoy a colorful street in contrast with the monotonous environment neighboring. The concept behind the exposition is to safeguard and encourage this kind of art.
